Endeavour, Season 2 (Russell Lewis, 2014)

I didn’t think I’d need much convincing for watching a police drama with a ginger god as protagonist, but I must say that I felt rather disappointed by the first episode. It just didn’t ring true, everything felt a bit convoluted and there just for effect… so I even considered giving up completely. I had liked the first season, but I somehow couldn’t be bothered.

Nonetheless, after a few weeks’ break, I decided to give it another go. I am glad I did, because the remaining three episodes are actually rather good. I loved the ghost story in the girls’ school, I never expected the inclusion of anything supernatural (to an extent) in a series like this. Handsome readhead and ghosts. Yes, please!

Jokes aside, the stories are well presented, they keep the tension and I really enjoyed the overarching conspiracy. Extra points for all the classical music. Nice cliffhanger, too.

So, yeah, good; if you like this sort of thing.

Endeavour (Russell Lewis, 2013)

A TV about a young Inspector Morse? Why not. After all, it’s on on Sunday nights, the perfect time for detective dramas.

I have to say I found the main character hugely distracting: on several occasions I found myself staring at his ginger sideburns and not paying any attention at what he was saying. The boy is, indeed, rather handsome.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed the series as a whole, and not only because of the protagonist. Episode 3 (‘Fugue’), the one about the serial killer, is indeed excellent and the rest are really good fun. I love the period detail, especially all the smoking – for how weird and out of place it seems nowadays – and the suits. Nonetheless, in this respect I must admit there are a few scenes that seem far too modern, like the singer in the cabaret bar in the last episode.

But, as I say, very enjoyable if you like detective dramas. I only wish I had watched more ‘Inspector Morse’, as I’m sure I missed a lot of references.
