The Bletchley Circle (Jaime Payne et al, 2012)

This turned out to be much better than I expected. After the initial disappointment of realising that it wasn’t actually set neither at Bletchley Park, nor during he war, I found myself actually quite liking the story.

The ‘case’ itself is nothing out of the ordinary, but it gets more and more exciting. The highlight are definitely the main characters, as they are all rather likeable and believable. Glad to read a second series has been commissioned; I’m curious to know how they develop. I hope to get more Enigma Machine in the new instalment!

headhunters – hodejegerne (morten tyldum, 2011)

i quite enjoyed this, to be honest. at the beginning i was a bit dubious: i was liking it, but i find it hard to relate to (or feel interest for) people moved by greed, but i knew there had to be a change in the storyline. and there was one. a major one. an amazing one.

all the story about the art-theft was a bit ‘whatever’, but then things started to go tits up and i was glued to the screen. of course, i loved ove and his gun-filled sex rituals with the russian prostitute. he was amazing.

then, there’s the incest prince from ‘game of thrones’, who does a very good job of being deplorable and psychotic. but the best is the slimey main character. it’s incredible how you start hating him so much but after a while you end up empathising with him. well, when someone finds themselves buried so deep in shit (literally, i’m afraid), it’s hard not to feel sorry for them. that big chunk in the middle where the film basically turns into a massive chase scene is brilliant.

and all because of what? because of society’s deluded perceptions of beauty. if he hadn’t had a complex because of his height, none of this would have happened, eh?
